The usage of "video-conference" technology represents an unquestionable breakthrough in the history of criminal justice as it can be employed to launch remote investigations and trials . For these particular advantages some of the contemporary criminal legislations and multiple international treaties have admitted the usage of this technology in the course of both preliminary procedures and trials . Evidently , the usage of the previously mentioned technology aims basically at developing the performance of criminal justice institutions as it shall enable these institutions to record testimonies of witnesses without any need of their physical presence in the court . Moreover , the usage of this technology provides criminal justice institutions with a technique to initiate remote trials against defendants who are already settled abroad or those who are settled in penal institutions . In the latter situation there will be no need to transport criminals from their penal institutions to attend their trial which may serve to avoid the expenditures dedicated to this process .
