Relationship between Personality Traits and Communication Skills among Students with Premenstrual Syndrome at the Technical Institute of Nursing

Abstract:
Background: There is still only a limited number of studies investigating the relationship between premenstrual syndrome, communication and basic personality traits. Aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between personality traits and communication skills among students with premenstrual syndrome at the Technical Institute of Nursing Subjects & methods: Research Design: Cross Sectional design was chosen in doing this examination. Setting: The present study was conducted at the Technical Institute of Nursing at Zagazig University. Subjects: 161 female understudies at first and second year of the Technical Institute of Nursing. Tools of data collection: were; characteristics of study participants, the Premenstrual Syndrome questionnaire, the Big five Personality Traits Scale and Interpersonal Communication Skills Inventory. Results: of the present study demonstrated that premenstrual syndrome was associated with age equal or more than 19 years, rural residence, menstruation period for five to seven days per month, menstruation cycle from twenty one to thirty five days, presence of dysmenorrhea and using analgesics as method of relieving pain. Nearly half of the studied sample had PMS-1 that included anxiety, irritability, mood swings, nervous tension and suspiciousness. Conclusion: the study concluded that the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome among study members was 55.9% and premenstrual syndrome had a statistical significant association with personality traits and interpersonal communication skills. Recommendation: the study recommended organizing of psycho-educational programs relating to coping with stress; anger , how to be socialized and decreasing absenteeism and carrying out a future research on investigating the effect of training program on the severity of premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
