Abstract:
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is considered an emergency condition requiring hospitalization, achieving optimal outcomes for patients with HE depends on the active participation of experienced and knowledgeable healthcare providers in providing care. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an intervention program on critical nursing management regarding HE. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. Data were collected from Medical Intensive Care Units at Zagazig University Hospitals. The study was conducted on (30) nurses who work in the above setting. Two tools were used for the collection of data, first a structured interview questionnaire for nurses to collect demographic characteristics and assess nurses' knowledge. The second tool was an observational checklist to assess nurses' practice of critical nursing management toward patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Results of this study showed that 53.3% of studied nurses were aged ≥30 years, 56. 7% of them had a nursing diploma, and all nurses didn't attend training courses about critical nursing management for patients with HE. There was a statistically significant improvement in total nurses' knowledge from 38.3±15.1 to 65.9±8.7 and total nurses' practice from 144.2±60.3 to 266.5±14.5 with a percent of improvement equal to 41.84% and 45.87% respectively after application of intervention program. Conclusion: there was a statistically significant improvement in total nurses' knowledge and practice of critical nursing management regarding patients with HE after the application of the intervention program, which reflects its positive effect. Recommendation: Maintain periodic training and educational programs to enhance the knowledge and practice of nurses regarding critical nursing management of patients with HE
