The Role of Modified Chelating Graphene Oxide for Vanadium Separation from Its Bearing Samples

Abstract:
An efficient vanadium adsorbent, GO-N1-(acetylcarbamothioyl)-2-hydroxy-N4-methyl terephthalamide (GOAMP), was prepared and used for adsorption of vanadium. GOAMP was prepared through interaction of graphene oxide with hydroxyterephthaloyl dichloride under reflux in alkaline media, the structure and morphology of prepared adsorbent GOAMP was investigated using different techniques, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface area BET analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that GOAMP exhibited excellent vanadium adsorption performance in aqueous solutions, with a vanadium adsorption capacity of 229.4 mg/g. Even in the presence of competing ions, GOAMP demonstrated a high degree of vanadium selectivity in the removal of vanadium. After three cycles, uptake capacity could remain over 95 percent, and after another three cycles, it could remain above 90 percent and ultimately above 85 percent for two cycles. This indicates that the GOAMP has greater stability, as well as a high capacity for restoration and reusability than other materials. The adsorption process also matched the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, according to the results of the study. The endothermic nature of the adsorption process was revealed by the predicted ΔH° and ΔG° values.
