Abstract:
Purpose: To develop a questionnaire suitable for identifying problems caused by tinnitus in Arabic-speaking adults with normal hearing and to ensure consistent future outcomes through estimating the scale's validity and reliability. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a new tinnitus reaction related questionnaire was developed based on Arabic patients' complaints and items from published Arabic-translated scales. A pilot study involved 20 participants to estimate face validity. Content validity was rated by expert professionals. A representative sample of 128 adults with tinnitus and normal hearing were subjected to history taking, basic-audiologic evaluation, socioeconomic status assessment, administration of the Arabic questionnaire twice one week apart, and administration of two validation scales once. The outcomes of the scale were analyzed for validity with exploratory factor analysis and construct validity assessment. Internal consistent reliability was measured with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, split-half reliability coefficients, and inter-item correlations. The external consistency of the scale was estimated by test-retest reliability Results: Factor analysis validated 18 items and categorized them into 4 dimensions (with eigenvalues >1); somatic effect, awareness, emotional, and anxiety. Total and subscale scores showed moderate to strong correlations with the scores of validation scales, indicating adequate construct validity. Measures of reliability revealed high internal and external scale, subscales, and items reliability. Conclusion: The developed Arabic questionnaire for tinnitus reaction is valid and reliable for assessment of tinnitus impact in Arabic-speaking patients.
