Role of magnesium chloride in the performance and phase composition of lead glass sludge foam

Abstract:
This study focused on the performance of glass foam fabricated by sintering LGS in the presence of different MgCl2 contents. Incorporating MgCl2 into LGS led to accelerate the softening, onset crystallization and crystallization temperatures as well as decreasing the sintering window and free Pb-concentration. The crystallization process was performed by the interaction of magnesia with silicate and the dissolved calcium (from the calcination of CaCO3) to yield diopside crystals. MgCl2 also promotes the dissolution of silicate network accompanied by cristobalite forma- tion, resulting in a negative effect on the bloating process.
