Simulating Flexural Behavior of Concrete Beams with Hybrid Reinforcement Under Cyclic Loads

Abstract:
his study involves a finite element simulation of reinforced concrete beams hybrid reinforced bars to determine the flexural behavior of the beams subjected to cyclic loads. The hybrid reinforcement includes a combination of both steel and fiber reinforced polymer bars, where two types of fiber polymer reinforcing bars are used glass and carbon. The hybrid combination of reinforcement involves different levels of partial replacement of traditional steel reinforcement with either glass or carbon fiber reinforced polymer bars. Material properties of concrete, steel and fiber reinforced polymers are entered in the ANSYS program then all beams are modeled using finite element where the beams are meshed into smaller elements and the loading and support plates are represented with high stiffness and restrictions of translation and rotation are performed before the cyclic loading run. Failure criterion of concrete, steel and fiber reinforced polymers are set in the program, after which, cyclic loading is modelled by ANSYS using increasing increment loads till the failure criteria of either concrete, steel or fiber reinforced polymer occurs. The loading pattern considered is the four-point loading where the middle third (area of failure) is under pure flexure with no influence of shear. The beams are loaded and results of the load and deflection during the cyclic loading are recorded then exhibited in load deflection curves. Results of the ultimate load, maximum deflection, cracking pattern and mode of failure are exhibited. A comparative study of the different hybrid fiber reinforced beams and the control steel reinforced beam is performed, subsequently conclusions and recommendations are reached regarding the effect of hybrid reinforcement on the flexural behavior of the reinforced concrete beams.
