Abstract: |
Conflict is a natural, inevitable condition in organization, and it is often a prerequisite for change in people in people and organization (Sullivan and Decker,1997). The conflict when managed properly, can promote organizational creativity, productivity, cost containment and can lead to satisfaction by all involved parties (Dove, 1998). The aim of this study was done to investigate the level and type of conflict among staff nurses as perceived by themselves and by their nurse leaders, identifying the different strategies utilized by nurse leaders to manage staff nurses' conflict and solicit staff nurse's opinion regarding their preferred style of conflict resolution.
Subjects and methods: Research design: A cross-sectional analytic research design were used. Setting: Zagazig University Hospitals. Subjects: The present study consisted of (348), were selected from the study settings, divided into two groups: first were staff nurses included (256), they had diploma degree and (11), a technical institute degree. Second group included (81), head nurses and they had a bachelor degree. Tools of data collection: Tools of this study were collected using two types of questionnaire sheets, one for the staff nurses and other for the head nurses' group. Head nurse's questionnaire consisted of three parts; socio-demographic characteristics, assess the causes of nurses' conflict and assessment questionnaire sheet to assess head nurse's opinion in the patterns of conflict resolution they utilized. Results: The study indicated that, the collaborative strategy was utilized by majority of head nurses (88.9%), and also preferred by majority of staff nurses (59.9%). Statistically significant differences were revealed between head nurses and staff nurses in their perception of interpersonal and intergroup conflicts, p≤0.001. Recommendation: attention should be paid to conflict through in-service education programs, nurses' participation in decision-making should be encouraged, using motivation aspects and reward system in active -confidence. Multi-center studies are needed to evaluate nurses' skills of conflicts resolution, assess administrative intervention to manage organizational conflict.
