Abstract:
SUMMARY: Background: Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational sessions on the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding preeclampsia. Methods: A quasi-experimental study design was conducted on 80 nurses in the high risk unit, obstetric department, Zagazig University Hospital. Two tools were used for data collection included structured interview questionnaire, included personal characteristics of the studied nurses, and an observation checklist for evaluating nursing management regarding pre-eclampsia. Both tools of the evaluation were used to assess nurses' level of knowledge and practice before and after three months of implementing the study. Results: Revealed that the mean age of the nurses was 32.98 ± 9.68yearsold, 44.3% of nurses had an average level of knowledge at the pre sessions phase. However, 86.2% & 77.4% of them had a good level of knowledge at post and follow-up session's phases respectively. Concerning practice, none of the nurses had adequate practice in the pre sessions phase regarding edema assessment compared with 85.0% in the post and follow up session's phases, and the mean value of nurses' practice regarding administration of MgSO4 rose from 3.00 to 4.72 ±2.73. Conclusion: The educational sessions were effective in improving the knowledge and practice of nurses. Recommendations: The study recommended frequent and schedule In-services training sessions should be applied for nurses at the hospital and a manual containing the basic needed information about Preeclampsia, as well as how to counsel and teach women should be available at the department.
