Abstract: |
More than two thirds of the academically gifted said they were subjected to harsh treatment while in the classroom, and nearly one third developed violent thoughts as a result.
All children are negatively affected by being treated harshly, but gifted children differ from other children in certain ways, and what they go through may be qualitatively different. It is important to realize that although these children are mentally superior, they may not be physically, socially, and emotionally.” The personality traits and interests of many gifted children can make them targets for bullying by their peers.
The harsh treatment that gifted children face was qualitatively and quantitatively different from that faced by their peers. Some studies have found that from 60 to 90% of school children said that they were being bullied, while 20% said that they had bullied one of their classmates. Most studies have found that the problem has worsened in recent years in primary schools, and is more violent in middle school, while it is about to disappear in secondary school.
