Effects of giving students a choice of homework assignments on academic motivation and self-direction of learning

Abstract:
The present research aims to study the effect of students' choice of homework in comparison to professor Selection of homework and student type effect. The semi-empirical approach was used. The researcher built and developed two measures, one for measuring academic motivation and the other for measuring Self-direction of Learning. They were applied to students before teaching the basics of learning course on two groups of students, one of which is a control group of 71 students (22 male, 49 female), students will be given a uniform homework assignment, The second experimental group consisted of 69 students (21 male, 48 female), Students are given opportunities to choice their assignments. At the end of the semester, the measures of academic motivation and self-directed learning were re-applied. By using a variance analysis, T test and Eta-squared (η2). The results showed that there are a statistically significant effect to student's select of homework on both academic motivation and self-direction of learning favor to the experimental group with a high impact factor value, while there is no effect to type of student and the interaction between the type of student and the choice of homework on both academic motivation and self-direction of learning, The researcher has recommended that we give the student the opportunity to choice homework assignments.
