Abstract:
Purpose: to assess surgical outcomes of two commonly used techniques for turbinate reduction: diode laser and bipolar diathermy in selected group of patients with chronic nasal obstruction resulted from inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Methods: this study was conducted on two groups of adult patients with a diagnosis of inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Methylene blue-colored saccharine test was done preoperatively. Patients were randomly distributed in 2 groups, one group for diode laser turbinectomy while the other group was managed by bipolar diathermy. Results: 42 patients (21 in each group) with an age range of 21- 38 years (mean: 26.0± 4.1) were included in this work. At the 1st postoperative month, there was significant difference between the studied groups' postoperative complications as regard pain, crusting and synechia with a favorable tendency towards the laser group. In diode laser technique, the saccharine test began to improve better than preoperative time at second month. Conclusion: both laser and bipolar cautery are effective in improving nasal obstruction and in preserving nasal muco-ciliary function with obvious tendency towards laser.
