Performance Optimization of PID Controller Based on Parameters Estimation Using Meta-Heuristic Techniques: A Comparative Study

Abstract:
Ziegler-Nicolas (ZN) is the standard method for estimating the gains of the Proportional-Integral—Derivative (PID) Controller in process control. However, the performance response that is produced based on ZN calculations for PID parameters can be enhanced using meta-heuristic techniques. Meta-heuristic techniques are stochastic search process algorithms that are based on random operators to explore the search space and its main advantages producing acceptable solutions near to the optimum in a reasonable time. Therefore, meta-heuristic algorithms choose the best values of the parameter of a PID controller that produce the Integral absolute squared error (IASE) which represents the objective function. Three systems were used as a case study have the following orders 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. ASCA-PSO algorithm is an enhanced version of SCA that was used to set the parameters of the PID controller for the three processes. The response of ASCA-PSO was compared with the response of using SCA, PSO, GA, EVOA, and ZN. ASCA-PSO has the superiority of producing the lowest IASE for the three systems.
