Abstract:
Inductive charging is a technology that allows an electric vehicle (EV) to charge its energy storage system without physical connections. It offers an appropriate solution for EV charging due to the associated advantages in terms of automation and convenience. However, inductive charging technology experiences challenges in terms of safe and efficient operation. The system might present safety concerns to the living and metal objects due to electromagnetic field emission. This issue has been addressed in the literature by the proper design for the inductive coupler, which includes coil configuration and shield design. This chapter presents a review for the inductive pad structure with more emphasis given to the shielding techniques. Three main shielding techniques, passive, active, and reactive, are discussed in detail in conjunction with the related studies presented in the literature. The chapter provides a rich guidance for the shielding types, impact, and design.
