Effect of Counseling Sessions on Social Phobia and Self- Esteem among Secondary School Female Students

Abstract:
Background: Youth could be a period of increased “roller coaster”, where changes in self-esteem develop gradually in a discontinuous manner that increases the self-consciousness and uneasiness over how people see each other. Aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of counseling sessions on social phobia and self- esteem among secondary school female students. Research Design for conducting this study was a quasi-experimental. Setting: this study was conducted at El-Sinbilawien governmental secondary school for girls, Dakhalia governorate, Egypt, during the School Year 2018-2019. Subjects: a purposive sample of 260 females were selected randomly and enrolled in the assessment phase. Then the counselling sessions (pre-post test) were carried out on 187 participants based on the assessment phase's result. Tools of data collection were socio-demographic data sheet, social phobia inventory (SPIN) and Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES). Results revealed statistically significant difference between pre and post-test mean scores of SPIN and RSES. It can be concluded that, the counselling sessions were effective in reducing the participants ꞌ social phobia symptoms through improving their self-esteem levels. The study recommended that, there is a great need for equipping the schools with a fully operating guidance office for educating students coping skills for managing anxiety in different social situations and raising their self-esteem levels.
