Abstract:
This study was conducted on the scleral ossicles of the eye in some flying and non-flying birds. 40 heads of chickens and 20 heads of duck (as non-flying species) in addition to 30 pigeon heads and 20 heads of ibis (as flying species). All specimens were used for gross anatomy except 2 heads of each species were exposed for microscopical examination. The scleral ossicular rings were extracted from the eye ball, cleaned and treated by 5% H2O2 solution for clearing and bleaching process. The results revealed that the number of these ossicles in each ring was 14 in all studied birds, except some cases in chickens where the number ranged between 13-15 ossicles and in duck were the number 14 or 15 Also, it was observed that, the ossicles of each ring have no fixed size as the smaller ones occupied the anterioventral portion while the larger were located in the posteriodorsal part, hence the width of the ossicular ring appeared asymmetrical. In addition, the ends of the ossicles typically overlapping each other as a mode for supporting these osseous rings as well as the eye ball as a whole.
