Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of the study is to evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes of flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer in cases of pathological tendo-Achilles tear. Methods: Fourteen cases (10 males and 4 females) with pathological Achilles tendon tears are included in this study. The average age was 53.2 years. American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) hindfoot score and tiptoe test are used for functional assessment. Pre-operative MRI is done for all cases as a method of diagnosis. Paired t-test is used to compare means. P-value ˂ 0.05 is statistically significant. Results: The mean follow up is 21±5.9 months. There is marked improvement of the mean pre-operative AOFAS score from 65.1 to 90.4 post-operative (p-value < 0.00001). Thirteen patients can perform tip-toeing at the end of the study. Only three minor complications are reported in this study. Conclusion: FHL tendon transfer is a valuable technique to bridge and reconstruct the gap present in pathological tears of tendo-Achilles with excellent clinical results and few hazards. wound healing complications are the main concern of this technique. Level of evidence: Level IV. Keywords: Achilles tendon; FHL; pathological tear and p-value.
