Background: Hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate (HIT) is a common cause of nasal obstruction. Surface cautery of the inferior turbinate is one of the surgical methods for management of this problem, but it is a destructive procedure resulting in deterioration of nasal mucocilliary clearance, crustations, adhesions, and bleeding. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of application of platelet rich plasma (PRP) following surface bipolar diathermy of hypertrophied inferior turbinate in promoting the normal ciliary function and improving the healing of nasal turbinate. Patients and methods: This study was applied on 30 patients that have chronic bilateral hypertrophy of inferior turbinate. All cases were subjected to surface bipolar diathermy of inferior turbinates bilaterally under general anaethesia, but PRP was applied to one side only (Left side). All patients were exposed to saccharine test before and after the procedure and endoscopic examination 1 week, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after the procedures. Results: Nasal mucociliary clearance was significantly improved and the complications following surface bipolar cautery of inferior turbinate were significantly reduced in the PRP treated side than the other untreated side. Conclusion: In this study, topical application of the platelet rich plasma after surface bipolar cautery of inferior turbinate is proven to improve nasal mucociliary clearance and decreased incidence of the complications following surface bipolar cautery like bleeding, synechia, pain and crust formation.
