Abstract:
Although space trusses have seen continuous development for the last few decades, their share in the widespread market of medium- to large-span structures is still unsatisfactory. Because of being dependent on expensive node connectors for their assembly, space trusses are commonly costlier than alternative structural systems, and this is reflected in their current low usage. A new space truss system has been recently developed with the main aim of achieving low cost with no compromise in the structural reliability or the constructional merits of other systems. After describing the new truss system and its features, this paper presents a study on the cost effectiveness of the system in comparison with equivalent beam structures in different practical situations. The work is intended to measure the success the new system is likely to have when competing against other traditional systems (such as beam and framed structures) for medium- to large-span applications.
