Abstract:
from a total of 415 fecal samples collected from 333 calves, 67 lambs and 15 kids, 106 samples were positive for Cryptosporidium species by the mZN technique and nPCR with overall prevalence of 25.6%. Cryptosporidium infection was found in all animal species involved in this study with the highest infection rate in calves by 27.4% (91/333) whereas, goat kids showed the lowest infection rate by 13.4% (2/15). Concerning to age of animals in relation to infection rate, a characteristic age-related prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection was recorded in animals where the results revealed that infection rates were reduced with an increase in animal age. Cryptosporidium infection rate was higher in 3–7-day aged calves by 30.8% (49/159) than in other two groups of older age, 26.3% (34/129) in 8–15-day-old calves and 17.8% (8/45) in calves with 16–30-day-old. Similarly, Cryptosporidium was more frequently detected in younger lambs (8-15 days) compared with older age groups. However, in kids, 12.5% (1/8) of tested samples from animals aged 3–7-day-old were positive for Cryptosporidium compared with 16.7% (1/6) in kids with age of 8–15-day-old.
