Abstract:
Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by several fungus species (Penicillium, Aspergillus and Byssochlamys). Patulin is a common contaminant of ripe apples and also present in other fruits, vegetables and food products. It has been reported to have mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic properties. The current study was aimed to evaluate the possible genotoxic effect (chromosomal aberrations) that may be induced by patulin (0.002mg/kg b. wt/day for 35 successive days) in bone marrow cells of the newly born rats after oral injection with patulin to both of their parents. Rats were randomly classified into two main groups each group included 12 mature rats (3 males and 9 virgin females). The 1st group (control group) was administered with distilled water and the 2nd group (patulin treated group) was orally injected with patulin. At the end of the experiment, each 3 of females were caged with one male for mating (in each group). After 14 days from parturition, 40 of the newly born rats (2 or 3 babies from each mother) were randomly used for the examination of chromosomal abnormalities in their bone marrow cells. The results illustrated that patulin elicited significant increase in total chromosomal aberrations (numerical and structural) in bone marrow cells of these rats' babies.
