Abstract:
Renewable energy resources pose a number of fundamental and practical challenges—such as cost and availability —that need to be addressed before significant levels of renewable source penetration into the existing power mix can be realized. The intermittency of renewable energy sources results in systems with strongly nonlinear, hybrid, and uncertain dynamics. This makes the application of classical control techniques, mostly based on linearized models and continuous models, not straightforward. More advanced control and optimization strategies therefore need to be proposed to enhance the performance of renewable energy systems with respect to stability, reliability, and sustainability.
