Abstract:
Abstract Childbirth is a great momentous event in a woman's life particularly for who gave birth for the first time. Physical presence by the nurse, use of acupressure and active participation of the woman in labor offer women an opportunity of having positive childbirth experiences as well as improved childbirth outcomes. Aim of this study was to compare the effect of maternal supportive care and acupressure on labor progress and neonatal outcome. Design: A quasi-experimental design was used. Setting: The study was conducted in the labor ward of Maternity and Childhood Hospital at Zagazig University Hospitals. Subjects: Purposive samples of 150 parturient women divided into three groups (supportive care, acupressure, and control groups) each containing 50 subjects. Tools of data collection were four tools. Tool I: Structured interview form, Tool II: Maternal supportive form, Tool III: The partograph and Tool IV: Summary of labor form. The results of the present study revealed that women in the supportive care group shows the least total mean duration of labor in comparison with the acupressure and control groups (395.6±86.7 vs. 429.2±121.4 & 502.5±138.3 respectively); the difference observed was statistically significant. (P<0.001). Moreover, the newborns Apgar score in the 1st and 5th minutes was higher in the supportive care and acupressure groups compared to the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). It can be concluded that maternal supportive care and acupressure could reduce the length of labor stages and increase the newborns Apgar scores. The study recommended that providing all maternity nurses in delivery room with efficient updating training regarding labor supportive care and acupressure and should be emphasized in both the under graduate and postgraduate curricula. Keywords: Maternal Supportive Care, Acupressure, Labor Progress, Neonatal Outcome.
