Effect of an Educational Intervention Program on Zagazig University Nonmedical Students' Knowledge about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is deliberated as one of endocrine disorder which most commonly affects the teenage girls with a prevalence of 5-10% of their reproductive age. Awareness and early diagnosis are the first step in its management to prevent further severe complications. Aim of the study was to: Evaluate the effect of an educational intervention program on Zagazig University nonmedical students' knowledge about polycystic ovarian syndrome. Subjects and methods: Research design: A quasi-experimental research design with pre/posttests was used. Setting: The study was conducted at three nonmedical faculties in Zagazig University. Subjects: 300 university students' girls were included in the study from the previously mentioned settings. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used to collect needed data: Tool I: Self-administered questionnaire to collect data correlated to general characteristics of the students. Tool II: Knowledge assessment tool (pre/post and follow up educational intervention), it comprises of two parts: Part 1: Apprehensive with students’ knowledge regarding anatomy and physiology of feminine genital system. Part 2: Focused on students’ knowledge regarding PCOS variables. Results: A statistically significant improvements was observed in total level of knowledge score after the educational intervention compared to its level before intervention, where 89.8 % of the studied students had poor knowledge in pretest which declined to 0.0% and 4.3% at immediately post and after two months of interventions respectively. Conclusion: The educational intervention resulted in a significant improvement of nonmedical university students' knowledge regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome. Recommendations: An application of educational intervention with a learning pictorial module for nonmedical university students' girls in various institutions should be conducted in order to increase their level of knowledge regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome.
