Abstract:
Effect of Educational Sessions about Dengue Fever on Nurse's Knowledge and Attitude at Zagazig Fever Hospital Introduction: Dengue fever is a rapidly appearing infection throughout the tropics and subtropics with expanded public health burden. Dengue viruses are transmitted between humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. After a dengue virus enters the human bloodstream, it spreads throughout the body. Symptoms appear in about eight to 10 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. Adequate training of healthcare providers is crucial to reducing infection incidence through patient education and collaboration with public health authorities. Aim of the study: The aim of study was to assess the effect of educational sessions about dengue fever on nurse's knowledge and attitude at Zagazig Fever Hospital. Hypotheses: 1. Nurses' knowledge score regarding dengue fever will be improved after conducting nursing educational sessions. 2. Nurses' attitude score toward dengue fever will be more positive after conducting nursing educational sessions. Subjects and Methods: Research design: A quasi-experimental interventional design, with pre-posttests was used to conduct this study. Setting: This study was conducted at the Outpatient and Emergency clinic in Zagazig Fever Hospital, the only hospital in Sharkia Governorate which provides care for patients who suffer from infectious diseases or communicable diseases. Study subjects: The sample included 71 nurses (39 diploma nurses, &32 bachelor nurses), working at the outpatient and the emergency clinic according to inclusion criteria. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used: Tool one: A questionnaire consisted of two parts: part A was used to collect data relating to demographic characteristics of the nurses, while part B involved nurse’s knowledge about dengue fever, a self-administered questionnaire. Tool two: Nurses’ attitude toward dengue fever, self-administered questionnaire was designed to assess nurse's attitudes toward dengue fever. Results: Results revealed that: The comparison of pre and post-tests for nurses’ knowledge and attitudes revealed highly statistically significant improvements (p <0.001) that justified the research hypotheses of educational sessions’ implementation. The total score of their knowledge increased from 9.9%in pre-sessions implementation, to 87.3% one month post sessions and the total score of their attitudes increased from 60.6% in pre-sessions, to 91.5%, one month post sessions. Additionally, the highest positive attitude focuses on nurse role in preprogram representing 69.0% compared to 97.2% in posttest. Conclusion and recommendations: In light of the results of the current study, it can be concluded that the study revealed that the nursing sessions were effective in increasing the level of nurses' knowledge as well as their positive attitudes toward dengue fever. Additionally, the results showed that the post-test scores were higher than the pre-test scores both in knowledge and attitudes of nurses. Based on the current study findings, the following recommendations were suggested: Primary prevention of infectious diseases like, dengue fever should be given priority and education about it should be applied in fever hospitals, through in-service health educational training sessions to be provided to all nurses in the fever hospitals especially the newly appointed ones before starting their work. Furthermore, an illustrated booklet for maintaining knowledge of the most important types of dengue fever should be available at fever hospitals used as reference. Further research should be geared towards implementing interventions to improve nurses' knowledge and attitudes about dengue fever.
