Introduction:
Deaf is devastating physical condition with deep emotional and economic implications. All studies and review of literature reported that adolescent Egyptians lack basic information on reproductive health topics and often receive information from sources that may be misleading or inaccurate. Investment in the health of this age group has played a major role in the development of human communities due to the dual role of women in community health. The community health nurse can advocate for deaf students by improving their needs, by designing health education intervention to protect them from hazards such as substance abuse and dangers of spread of sexually transmitted diseases and promote their healthy life style or even participating in teaching classes focusing on the targeted areas of reproductive health, family planning, and injury prevention.
Aim of the study:
The aim of study was to evaluate effectiveness of reproductive health program for adolescent girls with hearing-impairments at Sharkia Governorate.
Subjects and Methods:
A quasi-experimental design was used.
Setting:
This study was conducted at El- Amal school for deaf and hearing impairment Zagazig city, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt.
Study subjects:
All adolescent girls at El-Amal School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Sharkia Governorate. The total number of students was "50" whose age ranged between 12 to 19 years, and agreed to participate in the study.
Tools of data collection:
Three tools were used:
First; Structured socio-demographic questionnaire.
Second; Students’ knowledge regarding reproductive health scale.
Third; The assessment for the attitude of reproductive health scale
Results:
As for residence, 68% of studied sample are from rural areas. 62 % of their mothers and fathers are non-educated. The majority of adolescents had sufficient family income. Regarding students' total knowledge throughout intervention phases, the level of knowledge regarding reproductive health topics improved to 100% after intervention. Concerning students' attitudes towards puberty and reproductive health throughout intervention phases, the result indicates that the positive attitude changed from 30% in pretest to 94% in post and follow up tests. Additionally, friends followed sisters and teachers are preferred sources of information about puberty changes and reproductive health.
Conclusion:
In the light of the results of the current study, it can be concluded that, reproductive health program for adolescents girls with hearing-impairments was effective in improving their knowledge and attitude
Recommendations:
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations can be induced: The developed intervention should be implemented on a wider scale, in other primary schools, to confirm this finding. Randomized controlled trials are needed for unbiased assessment of the effectiveness of the program, with longer follow-up studies to evaluate its long-term effects. Knowledge regarding reproductive health based curriculums should be applied. Training intervention programs should be directed to the parents, children with hearing disabilities, and teachers about reproductive health.
