Abstract:
Dissolving pulps were obtained from depithed Egyptian bagasse by prehydrolysis of soda pulping, 0.6\% H2SO4 solution resulting in low-alpha cellulose content. increasing the acid concentration to 10\% induced hydrolysis of higher amounts of molecular weight carbohydrates, and consequently a reduced amount of pentosans and increased alpha-cellulose. Moreover, it resulted in favourable effects on the degree of swelling in water and alkalies, chemical reactivity and viscose filterability. The effects of using organic solvents, namely ethanol and dioxan, together with sodium hydroxide, during pulping of prehydrolysed bagasse on delignification, alongwith the chemical, physical and sub-microscopic characteristics of the pulp obtained, particularly their chemical reactivity and viscose filterability, were investigated.
