Morphological & functional changes evaluation to the upper limb of boxing players in Sharkia governorate

Introduction and Research Problem:
No athletic activity develops all muscle groups symmetrically and to the same extent, which inherently leads to morphological and functional adaptations. Continuous, unilateral training that predominantly targets one side of the body increases the physiological cross-sectional area of its muscles, resulting in a muscular strength disparity between the dominant and non-dominant sides. This asymmetry causes a functional deviation within the anatomical limits of muscles and ligaments, which can negatively impact competitive outcomes.
In elite-level boxing, athletes frequently need to execute effective punches with their non-dominant (left) hand. If the left hand possesses power and efficiency comparable to the right, the boxer can maximize points scored and secure victories. Therefore, it is crucial to train both arms with equal efficiency to prevent adverse morphological and functional asymmetries in the upper extremities.
Research Objective:
To design and evaluate a compensatory exercise program aimed at correcting muscular and functional imbalances in the upper extremities of boxers.
Research Questions:
1. Does the proposed training program affect the morphological variations between the bilateral muscles of the upper extremity in boxers?
2. Does the proposed training program affect the functional characteristics (physical attributes) of the upper extremity muscles resulting from these morphological variations in boxers?
Methodology:
• Research Design:
The researcher utilized a single-group quasi-experimental design, as it was deemed most suitable for the nature of this study.
• Sample:
A purposive sample of 24 boxers, aged 15-16 years, was selected from the Hehia Youth Center. The sample was divided into an experimental group (n=12) and a pilot study group (n=12).
• Tools and Equipment:
Stadiometer, medical scale, handgrip dynamometer, measuring tape, skinfold caliper, stopwatch, dumbbells, focus mitts, punching shields, jump ropes, medicine balls, heavy bags, sandbags, reflex bags, free weights, benches, and boxing gloves.
Conclusions:
1. The training program had a significant impact on the morphological characteristics of the upper extremity. The compensatory exercises demonstrated a clear effect on the non-dominant (left) arm, effectively correcting the muscular imbalance between the bilateral limbs, as well as on both sides of the trunk and neck.
2. The training program also had a significant impact on the functional characteristics of the upper extremity. The exercises improved the physical attributes of the non-dominant arm, mitigating functional disparities between the bilateral limbs and contributing to overall symmetry.
Recommendations:
1. Organizing specialized training courses for coaches on designing programs that emphasize the principle of muscular balance.
2. Prioritizing the balanced development of bilateral musculature (right and left sides), as well as maintaining the optimal strength ratio between agonist and antagonist muscle groups.
3. Integrating strategic planning for muscular balance from the early stages of athletic development.
4. Utilizing corrective exercise programs to treat muscular imbalances, thereby enhancing a boxer's scoring potential and competitive success.
5. Implementing training programs that systematically include specific exercises designed to address and correct muscular imbalances.
