Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental investigation on the coefficient of pressure distribution on steps under hydraulic jump conditions in order to provide more information on this important factor. Both A and B jumps at positive and negative steps are considered. The results show that the coefficient of the pressure distribution on the steps is a function of (a) the initial Froude number, (b) the step height ratio, (c) the slope of the channel bed and (d) the type of the formed jump (A or B) and (e) the type of the step (positive or negative). The developed equations are used to study the effect of various parameters on the pressure distribution coefficient on the steps. It is concluded that negative pressure may occur on negative step. Consequently, It is highly recommended to measure the dynamic pressure fluctuations on the faces of the steps to locate the negative pressure zones and to verify the occurrence of cavitation. Hence proper solutions to minimize or prevent damage of structures may be suggested.
