Abstract:
lowintensity (LI) rehabilitation program following total knee replacement operation (TKR). Patients and methods A randomized controlled study was conducted on 40 patients who had underwent TKR. They were allocated into two groups, with 20 patients each. The first group received HI progressive resistance exercise program, and the second group (control) received a standard LI rehabilitation program. Patients were assessed before the operation and then at 1, 3, and 12 months postoperatively. Outcome measures used were numeric pain rating scale, knee range of motion (ROM), the Oxford knee score, and functional performance measures, which included stair climbing test, timed up and go test, and 6-minute walk test. Moreover, the adherence of both the therapist and the patient to the specified therapy program was measured. Results At one month following the TKR operations, significant improvements were found in the first group compared with the second group in all the measured parameters except for the knee ROM. At 3 and 12-month follow-up periods, there were statistically significant differences between both groups in all the evaluated parameters except for the numeric pain rating scale and the knee ROM. Conclusion Both HI and LI rehabilitation programs are effective; however, HI program had superior functional gain and patient-reported outcomes compared with the LI program. Moreover, HI group has a long-term functional gain.
