Abstract:
This paper presents an investigation of the effects of soil properties on the performance of compaction grouting through analyses of the results of a field test conducted in Tokyo International Airport. The grouting performance is evaluated in terms of the attained injection pressure. The attained injection pressure of controlled injections is compared with. the initial fines content and mean particle size as representatives of the soil intrinsic parameters and with the inflation pressure of pressuremeter test as an indicator of the soil state. A major finding is the very good correlation of compaction grouting with pressuremeter test. The presented analyses also reveal that the performance in relatively shallow soils is different from that in relatively deep ones. This variation is attributed to the variation of grouting and failure mechanisms. The performance of shallow injections is mainly governed by the overburden pressure and shear strength of overlying soils, while that of deep ones is highly controlled by the local soil intrinsic parameters. Attributions and implications of the findings are also discussed in the paper.
