Abstract:
To recycle the waste product in Egypt and find new building materials from slag. Bricks were prepared from air cooled and granulated slag. Different mixes from these two types of slag with NaOH as well as Portland cement and pressed at 200 kg/cm(2) were investigated. The physico-mechanical properties as well as the kinetic of hydration such as chemically combined water and free slag contents were determined. The results show that the air cooled and granulated slag mixed with 6 wt.\% NaOH or 10- 12 wt \% Portland cement bricks for building materials can be prepared by alkali activation of slag. The combined water contents increase with the alkali activated slag. Also, the combined water contents increase with the alkali and Portland cement contents whereas the free slag content decreases in the same direction. The compressive strength and chemically combined water contents of bricks made from granulated slag were higher than those for air cooled slag. On the other side, the free slag content of granulated slag is lower than that of air-cooled slag. It can be concluded that the granulated as well as air cooled slag can be used for brick making by alkali activation.
