Abstract:
In the present study, we have evaluated the prophylactic activities ofsilymarin against liver cells damage due carcinogenic effect of DENA inrats at molecular level, through the evaluation of its effects on theexpression of rnRNA of SOD, CAT, p53, and COX-2.Sixty four male Albino rats were used in the study. Their Wightranged from 160-180 grams. The rats were divided into 6 groups: Controlgroup, DENA Group (rats injected with a single i.p. dose of DENA(200mg/kg), two weeks later they were injected i.p. with CC14 (2 mL/kg)three times ( a dose / week) to induce HCC), two pretreated groups with40 and 80 mg/kg bw SMN, and two post-treated groups with 40 and 80mg/kg bw SMN. ALT, AST and total & direct bilirubin were investigatedin serum. SOD and CAT were investigated in hepatic tissues. Also, thegene expression of SOD, CAT, p53, and Cox-2 was determined in hepatictissues. After statistical analysis our results referred to the following:~ Serum ALT & AST activities and total & direct Bilirubinlevels:DENA group revealed significant increase in the level of total& directbilirubin and in the activities of ALT & AST but silymarin -treated ratsrevealed improvement in these liver functions.~ Superoxide dismutase and Catalase activities in Hepatichomogenate:
