Abstract:
Incorporation of alternative feed ingredients in poultry dietshas become a popular strategy to counteract the rising prices oftraditional ingredients. Distillers dried grins with solubles (DDGS),the corn eo-product of ethanol industry, becomes one of thecommon alternative ingredients. Although DDGS may be seen as acost competitive alternative ingredient, there are concerns regardingits use in poultry diets such as: 1) Overall nutrient variability andlowered amino acid digestibility. Therefore, it would be beneficialto identify feed additives that could improve DDGS utilization inpoultry diets. Phytogenics have recently got considerable attentionsas feed additives due to their stimulant effects on growthperformance and nutrient utilization. 2) Unbalanced electrolytes;alternative feed ingredients (DDGS and canola meal) contains highlevel of dietary anions (chloride and sulfur), and low level of dietarycations (potassium) which lower the dietary electrolyte balance andinduce acidosis that could depress the bird performance, increaselitter moisture and/or induce leg problems. However, phytaseenzyme was found to be capable of increasing sodium utilization inthe gut. Therefore, phytase supplementation to diets containingDDGS, canola meal, and/or supplemental chloride could amelioratethe acidic shift that occurs in the dietary electrolyte balance. Thepresent work was conducted in three experiments as following:Experiment 1This experiment was conducted at the Poultry Research Unit,Liver, kidney and rumen tissue sample were collected forhistopathological examination which revealed acute cell swellingand lymphocytic aggregation (non specific lesions) in liver andalbuminus casts in some tubules and mild degenerative changes inkidney which also had non specific lesions but there was a defect inthe cornified layer of the rumen.
