Abstract:
Propolis is a resinous material collected by bees from bud andexudates of the plants which transferred in the presence of bee enzymeinto other complex substance composed of 30% wax, 50% resin andvegetable balsam, 10% essential and aromatic oil, 5% pollen and othersubstance. Bees use it to seal holes in their honey combs, smooth outinternal wall as well as to cover carcasses which died inside the hivein order to avoid their decomposition. Propolis has protective andtherapeutic effect against many diseases, bacteria, virus, fungus andturnors for thus; this study was conducted to evaluate the effect ofpropolis on albino rat infected with Trypanosoma lewisi and also itseffect on pigeon squabs infected with Trichomonas gallinae.Isolation of strain of Trypanosoma lewisi was done from choseninfected wild rats captured by traps from field and banks of river Nilecanals of Mini a El-Kammah at Sharkia province and maintained in 50albino rats (each of 150 gm body weight) by intra-peritonealinoculation of heparinized blood containing Trypanosoma lewisicollected from the infected wild rats.Strain of Trichomonas gallinae was done from infected squabscollected from lofts and morbets of Minia El-Kammah at Sharkiaprovince and maintained in squabs by oral route inoculation andpropagated in culture of glucose broth serum medium and left untilused.Propolis collected by scrapping off the frames of beehives locatedat Sharkia province, 3% water extract of pro po lis was prepared.
