Abstract:
Norfloxacin is a new antibacterial agents belongs to thefluoroquinolone family and is active against Gram- negativeEnterobacteria species. E-coli infection in chicken has been in lastdecade a major problem in poultry all over the world. The presentwork was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect ofnorfloxacin in healthy and experimentally infected chickens withE.coli. The sensitivity of E. coli strain of avian origin is investigatedin vitro to different antimicrobial agents. The effect of therapeuticdose of norfloxacin (10 mg/kg b.wt. in drinking water) for 5successive days on healthy and experimentally infected chickenswith E.coli was studied. Moreover; the effect of therapeutic doseof norfloxacin on haematological picture as well as liver and kidneyfunctions and histopathological studies were investigated. This research was held on eighty, one day old broiler chickswhich divided into 4 equal groups each of 20 chicks1 st Group: Non-infected and non-treated group (control group).2nd Group: Given norfloxacin dissolved in drinking water (Non-infected and treated with therapeutic dose of norfloxacinfor five days).3 rd Group: experimentally infected with E.coli and non-treated.4th Group: experimentally infected with E.coli and treated withtherapeutic dose of norfloxacin for five days.Samples were taken at the end of 1 st, ih and 14th days postdrug administration Five birds from each group were sacrificed
