Abstract:
The present work was performed to study the effect of licorice andcelery in the prevention and or treatment of the occurrence of hepaticdamage if induced by some common used drugs (paracetamol). Also itaimed to record the herbs side effect on the blood chemistry and theassoci ated lesion if present.This study was carried out on one hundred and eighty female ratweighting 125-150 gm, which were divided into 12 group each of 15 rat.The study was subdivided into three experiments. The first one includingthe groups (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) which were given one treatment fromparacetamol, licorice, celery or silymarin named respectively from 2-5 as compared with normal control group (1). The second experimentincluding the groups (6, 7 and 8) which firstly administered licorice,celery or silymarin daily for three weeks then administered paracetamolfor another three weeks. The third experiment, including the groupswhich previously adminstered paracetamol for 3 weeks for induction of hepatic damage then treated with licorice, celery and silymarin foranother three weeks. Five rats, from each group, were sacrificed aftercollection of blood samples from the retro orbital venus plexus at the endof the first, third and fifth week from the begninig of adminsteration oflicorice, celery or silymarin in the first experiment or from the beginningof paracetamol adminsteration in the second experiment or from thebeginning of the treatment with licorice, celery or silymarin in the thirdexperiment.Concerning the results of transferases in the first experiment, gp. (2)Showed an increase in the serum AST and AL T all over the experimentalperiod when compared with n011na1 control.
