Ectoparasites of large farm animals

Abstract:
A survey on ectoparasites infesting large farm animals underlocal environmental conditions of Sharkia province has been conducted. A total of 6402 animals were examined (1563 cattle, 2635 buffaloes, 488 horses, 566 mules and 1150 donkeys) of various ages and sexes during the period between May 2002 andApril 2003 .The detected ectoparasites were. Boophilus annulatus (15.46%); Psoroptes natalensis (10.70%); Sarcoptes. scabiei(4.980/0); Haematopinus tuberculatus (20.49%); Hippobasca equina (9.81 %); Tabanus taeniola (2.890/0); Stomoxys calcitrans (3.76%); Musca domestica (0.030/0); Luiclia sericata larvae (0.02%) and Chrysomya albiceps larvae (0.020/0) . The overall infestatio81.45% , 91.46, 16.60, 31.10 and 36.87% in cattle, buffaloes,horses, mules and donkeys.respectively.Seasonally , summer season showed the highest . level of infestation (74.16%), followed by autumn (66.94%) and spring (66.400/0) , while the lowest one was during winter (64.50%).Concerning the different species of animals, the highest infestationrate has been recorded in summer in cattle (94.64%) ; mules(50.55%) and donkeys (66.57%) while that in buffaloes (96.88%)and horses (25.450/0) recorded in winter and autumn respectively.In the aspect of intensity of ectoparasites on the animals , itwas found that the overall intensity was 29.49 ectoparasites peranimal.
