Incidence and public health importance of listeria species in poultry and their products

Abstract:
A total of ’375 samples including 100 raw chicken samples (25each or skin, gizzard, liver and heart); 100 raw Sudan ducks samples(25 each or skin, gizzard, liver and heart) and 100 samples of rawpekin duck samples (including 25 each of skin, gizzard, liver andheart) were randomly collected fr0111 various poultry shops of differentsanitation level at Mansoura city and in addition to 75 samples ofpoultry products (25 each of sausage, burger and luncheon) were alsocollected from different localities.The collected samples were transferred to the laboratory with aminimum of delay after their identi tication and packing in a sterilecontainer where they were screened for the presence of Listeria aswell as identification of existed Listeria species.The results showed that the incidence of Listeria species wereIS%, 22%, 270/0 and 2S% of the examined chicken, sudan ducks,. pekin ducks and chicken products, meanwhile Listeria monocytogeneswere isolated fr0111 4%, 6%, 7% and 6.6% of examined raw chicken,sudan ducks, pekin ducks and chicken products respectively.Other Listeria species were also isolated from the examinedsamples including L. innocua (11.42(Yo), L. grayi (6.93%), L. murryi(3.20/0), L. wcllshemeri (J .90/0) and L. ivanovi (2.4%).
