Abstract:
Ceftiofur has now proved to be a most valuable drug for the treatment of severe respiratory infections in a 11 animal species. The present study was designed to study the effects of ceftiofur on the development of foeti, fertility of male rats, and mutageEighty mature female albino rats were utilized in this study. Theywere divided into four equal groups each of twenty animals. The firstgroup was injected intramuscularly with the therapeutic dose of ceftiofursodium; 1 mglkg B.wt. once a day for 5 successive days from the 6ththrough the 10th day of gestation. The second group was injectedintraperitoneally with Staphylococcus aureus after 48 hours, postinfection it was injected intramuscularly with the therapeutic dose of ceftiofur; 1 mglkg B.wt. once a day for 5 successive days from the 6ththrough the l O” day of gestation. The third group was intraperitoneallyinjected with Staphylococcus aureus. The fourth group received notreatment and considered as a control group. On the 20th day of gestation, each dam was sacrificed after beinganaesthetized by using ACE mixture and a caesarean section wasperformed to obtain their foeti and the uterine horns were examined forresorption sites. The foeti were examined for possible morphological,visceral, skeletal and histopathological changes
