Ectoparasites of some wild birds

Abstract:
Examination of 197 wild birds during the period extended fromthe bigining of May (1994) till the end of April (1995) showed that 77(39,08%) were infested with 12 species of ectoparasites (8Mallophaga + 4 Acarina). The Mallophaga species were:- Ardeicolaardae, Menopon galiinae, Ciconophilus decimfasciatus,Strigiphilus cursistans, Cucuiogaster h eterograph us, Degeerieliarufa rufa, Menacanthus stramenius and Lipeurus caponis. TheAcarina species were:- Falculifer rostratus, Megninia cubitalis,Argas persicus and Dermanyssus gallinae.In case of Mallophaga, the infestation rate was very high inlittle owl (66.66%), then buff backed heron (54.67%) followed byEgyptian hoopoe, Egyptian kestrel, eagle owl, black bird, blackwinged kite, wagtail and Egyptian nightjar (51.85,35.29, 1l.11, 7.14,5.88, 0.0 and 0.0% respectively).Conceming Acarina, the infestation rate was very high in wagtail (68.42%), followed by black bird (57.14%), then buff backed heron and Egyptian hoopoe (11.90 and 7.40% respectively).Dealing with the seasonal dynamics, the infestation rate was high during spring (50%), followed by Winter (40.98%), then Summer (39.53%) and low in Autumn (23.25%).
