Abstract:
The camel has been a traditional beast of burden, capable of extraordinary feats of endurance in the hot arid zones it in hibits. Its use as a competitive athletic animal is quite recent developed. The sport of camelracing is one that raises some questions about determinants of superiorathletic performance. Though evolution various species within the animalKingdom have developed different strategies for survival, and a highdegree of speciatisation is found. Environmental factors such as physicaltraining can modulate the gene expression. Not much research has been carried out on the role of blood in thecamel’s ability to withstand long period of dehydration and rapid rehydration. In addition no much reports describing the metabolic andphysiological demands which racing imposes on camels. The purpose ofthis investigation was to obtain information about the blood biochemicalchanges associated with racing. The current study was carried out on a totanumber of 27 apparently clinically healthy trained, athletic, and untrainenon-athletic, camels. Samples were obtained from El-Arish in April, ofboth sexes. The untrained camels included seven females and three males, and the trained camels included eleven females and sex males. All animalswere 3-6 years old and had body weight of 320-450 kg. All camels were subjected to perform a high intensity race which was held over a distanceof 6 km. day). Macroscopically, the mucus membranes appeared pale withslightly enlarged and pale kidneys, liver, enlargement with hemorrhagic patches, pneumonia area, hypertrophied
