Abstract:
I. Field StudyA total of 390 samples were collected from water, sediments and fishfrom AIabama, Louisiana and Mississippi catfish farms. Concerning fish, measurements were made on gill, liver, kidney, spleen and muscle samples. The following metals: aluminum (AI), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be) bismuth(Bi), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) mercury (Hg), indium (In),lead (Pb). manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) weredetermined in water, sediment and fish tissues by using Inductively CoupledPlasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS).The field study showed the following results:water: The overall mean of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, and AI concentrations (ppm)in the water source were 0.15,0.02” 0.98, 0.11, 0.13, and 0.09 respectivelyIn samples collected from pond water, values were 0.78,0.05,0.6,0.79,0.16, and 0.53. In addition, As, Be, Bi, Cd, Hg, In, Pb, and Se concentrationswere found only in trace amounts.Soil and Sediments: the overall mean concentration of As, Be, Bi, Cd, Cr,Cu, Hg, In, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn, and Al in soil samples were 134.73,6.15,46.15, 23.39, 45.18, 33.89, 20.73, 3.10, 65.19, 71.49, 26.5, 698.23, 24.09,and 9851.99 ppm wet wt., respectively. from the sediment samples, theoverall mean concentrations were 15.94, 5.53, 42.89, 18.43, 22.27, 21.17,86.96, 2.78, 835.42,24.03, 103.90, 152.24,48.09, and 5512.79 ppm wet wt.for As, Be, Bi, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, In, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn and AIrespectively.Fish:(1) Gills: The overall mean concentrations of Cr, Cll, Mn, Ni, Se, Znand AI (ppm / wet. wt.) in gills were 0.02,0.02,0.16,0.11, 0.04, 0.55 and0.4 7 respectively. Concentrations of As, Be, Bi, Cd, Pb, Hg and In werefound but in trace amounts.
