Abstract:
Atherosclerosis JI is one of the mostimportant factors causing cardiovascular disease and is governed ( by the type of fat in the diet.• In the p r-e s er.t work, the protective effect of some edible oils such as linseed and soybean oilsagainst the occurrance of atherosclerosis was tested in gr0ups of rats by giving them such oils before orafter induction of atherosclerosis by cholesterol or vit. D2. For the sake of comparison, the hypolipidemic effect of nicotinic acid was also studied One ”hundred and fifty clinically healthy male white rats with average body weight 200 gms were usedin the experiment. Blood from 10 animals was collected for normal serum lipid measurment. One hundre andforty animals were divided into 4 g r-o up s . Groups and 2, each of 40 rats, were given cholesterol andvitamin D2 respectively for induction of atherosclero- s is. The rea f t er, r a t sin ea c h g r 0 u p we res u b d i v i d e d into 4 subgroups A, B, C and D. Subgroup A was kept as atherosclerotic control, subgroup B was treated with n i cot inic acid,linseed and soybean oils respectively.
