Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate some pharmacological studies on Ambrosia maritima (Damase i s a l . The herb has long been used in traditional medicine forthe treatment of renal troubles, inducing diuresis and asantispasmodic. Using Chromatographic methods, the two majorconstituents of the plant were isolated and were found to be damsin and ambrosin. The isolated substances were then testedfol their effects on different tissues and organs.Effe6ts on the smooth muscleExperiments performed on the intestinal smooth muscles revealed a dose dependant inhibitory effect of wateryextract of Ambrosia maritima (2 mgiml)on the intestinal motility of rabbit duodenum. The ,action of the wateryextract was proved to be directly relaxant to the intestinal musculature.Ambrosin :or damsin of Ambrosla maritima in a dose of 4 ml in concentration 8XIO-4 g/ml induced marked stimulation of the intestinal motility. Investigating the sitedirectly stimulant effect, stimulant. of action of ambrosin proved a while damsin was ganglionic
