Protozoal Parasites of Some Wild Birds

Abstract:
The present studies were carried out on the protozoal parasites of some wild birds in Egypt. Wild birds were live-trapped by special hunters from Abou-Rowash, Giza province. A total of 72 wild bird representing 8 avian species [4 Egyptian kites (Milvus migrans aegyptius), 8 black-winged kites (Elanus c. caeruleus), 13 Egyptian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus rupicolaeformis), 10 little owls (Athene noctua),Six birds (8.33%) from three different species (Milvus migrans aegyptius, Falco tinnunculus rupicolaeformis and Athene noctua) were found to be infected with one or more blood protozoal parasites and 5birds (6.94%) from a single species (Upupa epops major) were found tobe infected with a single species of enteric protozoa (/ sospora upupae).The birds found to be infected with haernoprotozoan parasites wereall belonging to birds of prey (Falconiformes and Strigiformes). Of the 44 birds of prey examined 6 (13.64%) were found to be infected withone or more haemoprotozoan parasite.
