Abstract:
Praziquantel is a broad spectrum anthelmintic drug used for human and animal as schistosomicide and cestocide. The present studywas conducted to gain more explicit information on its effect on isolatedpreparations and intact animals. The obtained results are summarized as follows.EFFJ«;fS ON ISOLATED SMOOTH MUSCI.I!SA dose-dependent stimulatory effect was produced by praziquantel on the rabbit duodenum, guinea pig ileum, rat fundic strip. These effects were attributed to the cholinergic activity of the drug.Praziquantel prodcued a dose related increase in the force and frequency of contractions of the non oestrus, oestrus and pregnant uteri of a cholinergic nature.Praziquantel produced stimulation of the guinea pig bronchialmuscle. These effects are explained by the stimulation of the peripheral cholinergic receptors.A relaxant effect was achieved by praziquantel on the rat thoracic aortic strip preparations which might be of a cholinergic nature.
