Abstract:
Toltrazuril is a novel anticoccidal agent. The drug is used for treatment of outbreaks of coccidiosis in chickens. It has a high broad spectrum anticoccidial activity. Treat-ment with toltrazuril is implemented via the drinking water and lasts fOT 2 days, during which water with an activeingredient content of 25 ppm is offered to the affected chickens. (Corresponding to about 6-8 mg toltrazuril/kg body weight/day). If necessary, the treatment can be repeated once or twice after a treatment free interval of 5 days. The present work was conducted to gain more explicit information on the side effects of the drug, through study-lng its pharmacodynamic effects in chickens, liver and kidney functions and its histopathological effect.Effects on isolated preparations:In the present investigation, toltrazuril inhibit themotility of the isolated smooth muscles of both the intestine and oviduct of chickens. This effect was evidentto be due to an antihistaminic activity of the drug. Toltra- zuril produced decrease in the contractility of the heart and decrease in the coronary outflow.
