Abstract:
Nalidixic acid is a quinolone derivative, used for the control of colibacillosis and salmonellosis in chickens. The pharmacological effects of nalidixic acid were studied on intact chickens. The blood pressure, respiration and ECG. The effect of the drug also studied. The chicken aortic strip was used to explore effects on arterial blood vessels and site of action.efficacy of therapeutic dose of nalidixic acid 1n chi.cks . experimentally infected with Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium was investigated.Special emphasis was drawn to study the drug induced ef fec t s tha t could be reflec ted on liver and kidneyfunctions and the histopathological changes involving these vital organs.Effects on blood pressure, respiration and ECG pattern: Nalidixic acid (25 mg/kg b i wt . ) given by intravenousinjection into unanaesthetized chickens elicited a hypotensive effect (20 mmHg) with an i n c r e a s e i nrespiratory rate by about 10%. Double therapeutic dose of nalidixic acid (50 mg/kg b.wt.) produced a decreaseln the arterial blood pressure of 40 mmHg with increased
