Abstract:
Mastitis is the most costly disease to animal agriculture throughout much of the world resulted in lowering milk yield, increased costs of milkproduction and reduced milk quality .Friezian dairy cows with acute clinical mastitis were used to study theefficacy of enrofloxacin (Baytril) as a new drug for mastitis treatment inEgypt. Its efficacy was compared with 2 other drugs in current use in dairyfarms, cefacetrile (Vetimast) and gentamicin (Gentamast). Thepharmacokinetics of the used drugs were also studied in milk and comparedwith MIC range of isolated bacteria from infected cases. Drug residues of tried drugs were also estimated in milk . The microorganisms isolated from infected cases were E. coli (36.46%),Staph. aureus (35.42%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (15.62%) and Strept. uberis(12.50%) . Antibiogram study of isolated microorganisms showed that the most effective tested drugs was enrofloxacin followed by cefacetrile or gentamicin . , Fifty six cases were treated; for 3 successive days, with enrofloxacin either intramammary (250 intramammary (235 mg/quarter). Twenty cases were treated; for 3 successivedays, with gentamicin intramammary (100 mg/quarter) .
